We've got to move!

Page One Bookstore is on the move!

We've just gotten word from the landlord that the space we've been leasing for 20 years is being given over to a new tenant. So we're looking for a new home! Quickly!

The current plans that we've been alerted to will have the current space of Page One torn down and rebuilt as a Walmart grocery store.

Ideally, we'd like to find a local landlord who is excited about having a local legend in it's commercial space.

We will be working on the move diligently so that we can accommodate the approaching deadline. We appreciate the support we've had here at Juan Tabo and Montgomery and we look forward to finding new life in a new space!

Don't panic folks - we've survived the economic downturn, we got through the bankruptcy - we're too stubborn to give up now!

Anyone interested in volunteering to help, please send an email to loveyourlocal@page1book.com with your contact information so that we can let you know when thing get moving!

Mist - A New Urban Fantasy

Page 1 welcomes author Susan Krinard for a book signing on Saturday, July 20th at 3pm!

Mist lives a normal life. She has a normal job, a normal boyfriend, and a normal apartment in San Francisco. She never thinks about her past if she can help it.

She survived. That’s the end of it.

But then a snowy winter descends upon San Francisco … where it never snows. And in quick succession, Mist is attacked by a frost giant in a public park and runs into an elf disguised as a homeless person on the streets…and then the man Mist believed was her mortal boyfriend reveals himself to be the trickster god, Loki, alive and well after all these years.

Mist’s normal world is falling apart. But thankfully, Mist isn’t quite so normal herself. She’s a Valkyrie, and she’s going to need all her skill to thwart Loki’s schemes and save modern Earth from the ravages of a battle of the gods.

Please join us on July 20th at 3pm for what promises to be a very interesting event!

This event is free and open to the public.

Renowned Environmentalist Arrives!

Renowned British Environmentalist Tony Juniper comes to Page 1 on
July 21st at 2:30pm!

What Has Nature Ever Done For Us?: How Money Really Does Grow On Trees is published in the United States by Synergetic Press of Santa Fe and has already become a bestseller in the UK.

During recent years, environmental debate worldwide has been dominated by climate change, carbon emissions and the greenhouse effect. But a number of academic, technical, political, business and NGO initiatives indicate the emergence of a new wave of environmental attention focused on “natural capital,” “ecosystem services” and “biodiversity,” things nature does for us.

In What Has Nature Ever Done for Us? British environmentalist Tony Juniper points out that as a species we think that everything nature does for us — providing water, pollinating plants, generating oxygen, recycling miracles in the soil and much more — is free, but it isn’t. Its economic value can, and has been, measured. And upon realizing what that value truly is we would stop treating our natural systems in a destructive manner. For example, in 2005 Hurricane Katrina cost the US $81 billion and the damage still remains. If the land around the levees hadn’t been redeveloped for shipping and aquaculture, at an estimated value of $100,000 to $450,000 per square mile of natural mangroves, then, it is believed, much of the damage caused to the city would not have occurred.

This book contains impactful stories imparting warnings about this and other unfortunate occurrences such as a rabies epidemic that followed the disappearance of India’s vultures (drugs administered to cattle killed the birds, leaving uneaten carcasses that led to an explosion of wild dogs), as well as promising and enlightening tales of how birds protect fruit harvests, coral reefs shield coasts from storms, and rainforests absorb billions of tons of carbon released from automobiles and power stations. As a result of its immediacy, Tony Juniper’s book will entirely change the way you think about life, the planet and the economy.

Murder at the Belmar

Local Author BC Stone visits on Wednesday July 24th at 7pm.

Page 1 is thrilled to welcome local author BC Stone to discuss his debut suspense novel Murder at the Belmar!

There’s malice in Mazatlán, where film star Kay Francis is enjoying a much-deserved vacation, staying at the glamorous Belmar Hotel. Her sabbatical is rudely interrupted when she discovers a dead body in her hotel suite. The deceased lady is mystery writing diva Mavis Wembley, who was visiting Mazatlán to attend an annual reunion of mystery writers, most of whom wish her no good. Cinephile chief of police Capt. Seguro reluctantly accepts Miss Francis’s offer of support in ferreting out the many clues and solving the maddeningly complex case. Miss Francis proves to be more than a capable sleuth, but events progress and there is a desperate race against time to prevent further tragedies from occurring. The number of colorful writerly suspects seems to grow by the minute, and interspersed within the story are cameos by Errol Flynn, Somerset Maugham and Frida Kahlo, among others, all set amidst the picturesque, Pacific coast backdrop of the city of Mazatlán.

Please join us in supporting another local talent.

This event is free and open to the public.

Healing the Pain of Heartache

Local Author Dr. Erv Hinds on Friday July 26th at 6:30pm!

Page 1 welcomes Local Author Dr. Erv Hinds for the release of his latest work Healing the Pain of Heartache.

"As a cardiac anesthesiologist, I had a concrete medical and scientific relationship with the heart. This became a personal relationship when I myself required a heart valve repair. With the untimely death of a college-age daughter, the 'broken' heart became emotional—yet the pain felt profoundly physical. I felt compelled to write about these intersecting relationships with the heart that I and others have experienced in 'broken heart syndrome.'" —DR. ERV HINDS

This event is free & open to the public.

How To Make An African Quilt Book Talk and Signing

with New Mexico Author Bonnie Black

Saturday, July 27th at 2pm

Local author Bonnie Black will be at Page One Bookstore for a talk and signing for her book How To Make An African Quilt. The Taos News described Black's book: This adventurous story, based on Black’s life-changing experience of living and working in the fabled city of Ségou, Mali, West Africa, has just been published by Nighthawk Press, a new, independent press in Taos. African Quilt is a sequel to her earlier memoir, How to Cook a Crocodile (Peace Corps Writers, 2010), about her work as a health and nutrition volunteer in Gabon. Black’s Mali memoir evokes a time and place in Africa and brings all its colorful characters to life on the page. The authentic voices of the Malian women are woven throughout the story as well as a parallel fictional narrative with its own compelling drama. The writing is strong, honest and informed.

In 1999, at the request of a talented group of Malian seamstresses, Black taught herself the art of American patchwork quilting from a quilting book and then taught it to impoverished African women. She says, “This gratifying work ultimately developed into an exciting economic development effort I called Patchwork Project.” Her book, like the Project itself, seeks to build a bridge that connects disparate worlds and cultures.

Please join us in welcoming this local author and learning about the Patchwork Project and Bonnie Black's books as well as her adventures in Africa!

This event is free and open to the public.
